Biography
Usually colorful, my artistic style is imaginative, eclectic and “out of the box.” My art is meant to celebrate fun with fancy, illuminate nature, explore the human experience or highlight a different point-of-view. A self-taught artist, my art adds a unique backdrop to emotion, drives the mood or invokes an unlikely thought. It is a “glimpse” into the underlying story. It often shines a backlight of strength and diversity of colorful struggle. It marks or spotlights the investigated subject in its peace or triumph. The black and white works pronounce and provoke the imagination of color. My simple definition of the lines, and unusual color combinations are important to the unique expression of the image. My art strikes just the right cord. In the unusual, there is surprising harmony. One is invited to relation to it with their own interpretation or as they are moved. No distraction or guided tour of what to think. Just the announcement of the scene.
About the Artist
Ola Gilkey, is a Southern California native practicing art since 2003. A self-taught Artist, she draws, paints, writes and melds genres to create mix-media art. From illustrations to ink drawings and paintings to photography she is influenced by the lens, the emotion and the signs of the times to create unique works. A lifelong learning and an art enthusiast, her whimsical side and experiences speak through her pieces. Innovative practices influence her style, making it varied and ever evolving. She believes that everything that touches your life can be the inspiration for a work. She loves the words that spark the picture and marvels at the image that drives a different narrative. It is always surprising, even to her yet familiar. More importantly the conclusion of the viewer is especially rewarding. Her organic touch can only come from experience and connection. Tone and color, temperature and season add their own perspective to her pieces. She interprets in an “othered” voice and her multi-faceted pieces yearn to come to life.
Just another creative side!
